The airline was established as a joint venture involving the SAS Finance Group, led by Togbe Afede XIV, alongside Chinese aviation giant Hna Group and Hainan Airlines. This international partnership allowed the carrier to secure advanced regional jets, steadily growing its fleet to serve key West African destinations like Accra, Kumasi, Tamale, and Lagos.

Togbe Afede XIV did not limit his business ambitions to aviation alone. His entrepreneurial footprint in Ghana spans banking, gold mining, energy, and sports management, most notably through his ownership of the Ghanaian premier league football club Hearts of Oak, founded in 1911.
By integrating African business leadership with strategic foreign investment, Africa World Airlines carved out a distinct operational identity. This partnership model reached a significant milestone by December 2024, cementing the airline’s status as a key private carrier in the West African aviation sector.
